Achieving Net Zero Emissions - Continuing Professional Development Course

Objectives

To provide practical information for use by 1) professionals looking to work on aspects of the green transition or those looking for employment in the low-carbon energy sector; 2) businesses looking to understand their current environmental impact and how to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

To develop the skills and expertise needed to take positive action on climate change in the commercial sector.

Course structure

The course will be run over 8 weeks with 5 hours of lessons & project work in two evening classes per week, amounting to a total of 40 hours study. The content will be taught as modules with the following headings:

1)       Causes of climate change & implications for society

2)       Emissions’ calculations, energy conversions & economics

3)       Greenhouse gas inventories, markets & legislation

4)       Carbon cost, sequestration, offsetting & credits

5)       Renewable power, energy storage & electricity grids

6)       Low-carbon heating & building efficiencies

7)       Sustainable fuels & transport solutions

8)       Paths to net zero 2050, risks & uncertainties

An optional field trip to Scandinavia is also planned where participants will visit large-scale renewable power installations and facilities where hydrogen, carbon capture and energy storage are being tested.
