Empowering a green future through research and training
At the Energy & Sustainability Centre, our mission is to advance the green transition by providing knowledge to communities, businesses and the public sector through independent research, verifiable data, practical training and strategic advice. We champion local renewable energy, affordable heating solutions and a low-carbon economy to ensure a secure, sustainable future for the Isle of Man.
Our goal is to ensure that all members of society benefit from the commitments in the Isle of Man Climate Change Act 2021.
ESC is a public-private partnership
Focussed on providing knowledge on the energy transition and developing realistic paths to sustainability, our aims are to:
Research low-carbon solutions for islands & small nations
Educate businesses & local people in energy transition opportunities
Facilitate collaboration and provide open access to practical information
ESC is a non-profit educational institute and a non-governmental organisation.
Why the Isle of Man?
The Manx Government has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is the only nation with the status of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – a ‘learning place for sustainable development’.
With a population of 85,000 people currently relying on oil and gas for power, heating and transport, within 25 years the Island will move from emitting around 650,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum to none. Significant benefits will come by working together to find the best options in an objective way based on unbiased information - the role that ESC has taken on board.
