Prior to that he ran his own business for 25 years, specialising in energy efficient lighting band controls systems. He is also a Member of the Chartered Management Institute. . Dave Quirk is Research Director at ESC and Chairman of the Manx Geological Survey with a PhD in earth science. He is a specialist in energy and natural resources with the position of Energy Transition Advisor at DTU Offshore, part of the Technical University of Denmark - a world leader in renewable energy technologies. Dave has previously worked in industry, including in oil & gas with Shell and Maersk, and now collaborates with international companies and national authorities on subjects as diverse as energy storage and public engagement. Over the last five years, Dave has carried out research, presented papers and published scientific articles on the implications of climate change and economic ways of achieving net zero emissions. Adrian Cowin is the former Senior Meteorological Officer in the Isle of Man Government, and has extensive experience as an Operational Meteorologist. He is the Island’s foremost scientist on weather and climate change and has a keen interest on mitigating the impacts. Adrian is Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and, for 17 years, he has served as a Commissioner for Arbory Parish. This is where gas power has served us well. It does, however, come at a price. The cost of Pulrose power station from 2003 (when it was built) to 2023, has been £2.1 billion for plant, mainten-ance and fuel, with inflation. This equates to an annual cost of £106 million in today’s money and explains the high electricity price of 29.1 pence per kWh. In comp-arison, wind and solar power are significantly cheaper as the fuel is free and the maintenance costs are low. But, there again, energy storage is also needed - to provide the flexibility to match demand. Using the latest data, ESC’s energy system models show it would cost around £0.3 billion over 20 years to provide all the Island’s electricity from wind plus some solar and suff-icient energy storage. Global data are used to demonstrate the effect that carbon emissions have had on temperatures, sea-level and ocean acidity. These emissions result from burning organic carbon (fossil fuels & vegetation), industrial manufacturing and agriculture. Although there are uncertainties in the degree of warming and climate change we can expect in the future, the greenhouse effect is indisputable. Solar energy absorbed by the surface of the Earth is radiated back to the atmosphere as infrared energy. Rather than being lost to space, too much of the infrared energy is now being trapped by rising amounts of greenhouses gases, predominantly carbon dioxide, causing the atmosphere to heat up. This effect was already predicted by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. In addition, more carbon dioxide is being dissolved in sea water so that the oceans are becoming more acidic, a threat to shelled animals such as corals. To maintain a climate comfortable for humans and an environment suitable for present-day animals and plants, emissions of greenhouse gases need to be quickly and effectively curbed.
